Highlights in the Year 2014

The Red Noses presented their new program for mentally handicapped children – a performance called Caravan Orchestra. This is the first program of this kind in Slovenia. Once again, their long term partner,Lek, a Sandoz company, is supporting them in fulfilling their mission.

Lek, a Sandoz company, understands knowledge transfer and helping young people gain practical experience as a part of its social responsibility. Therefore the company has been cooperating for many years with academic institutions, including the Faculty of Chemistry andChemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, which in early February awarded the company a certificate of appreciation for the longstanding and extensive  collaboration in practical training of students.

Publisher Dnevnik, the organizer of the GoldenThread project for selecting the best employers in Slovenia, awarded Lek, a Sandoz company, the Golden Practice Award for the project Regional BioCamp.According to the panel’s reasoning, the Regional BioCamp is a thoughtfully designed project, carried out according to standards of excellence. With its long-term vision of establishing relations with young talents in an international environment, the project generates benefits for both young people as well as Lek, a Sandoz company, as their potential employer.

More than 300 associates of Lek, a Sandoz company, Novartis Pharma, Novartis Animal Health and Alcon have dedicated this day to volunteering. They joined many associates throughout Novartis across the world to lend a hand as volunteers in their local communities, as a part of theNovartis global initiative Community Partnership Day.

Today, the Red Noses performed in the CaravanOrchestra for children and youth under the care of the Centre for occupational rehabilitation (COR) in Črna na Koroškem. This musical theatre program, the first of its kind in Slovenia, was specially designed for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The Caravan Orchestra program has been supported by the Red Noses’ long-term partner, Lek, a Sandoz company.

The Red Noses performed out a Caravan orchestra performance for children with developmental disabilities in theBilingual Primary School II Lendava. The Caravan Orchestra is the first musical theatre program of its kind in Slovenia, specially designed for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The performing clowns focus on the receptiveness and the emotional state of young audiences addressing them through music, colorful requisites and sounds. The Caravan Orchestra program has been supported by the Red Noses’ long-term partner, Lek, a Sandoz company.

On Wednesday, 28 May, Lek, a Sandoz company,joined the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia (MRAS) as its long-term partner at the conference for journalists, where MRAS presented to theSlovenian public its activities for the current year, gave advice for safe hiking in the mountains during the summer months and presented a leaflet with advice in the event of an accident in the mountains and rescue intervention.

At this year’s fourth Regional BioCamp,organised by Lek, a Sandoz company, the healthcare experts, experts from faculties and Lek, Sandoz and Novartis spoke about modern therapies for the treatment of metabolic disorders, about rare diseases and the importance and role of biosimilars. The participants, 35 students from 10 countries, challenged themselves in preparing a case study how to develop and send to the market anew product. The best individual performance came from Boris Brus from Slovenia and Janko Ignjatović from Serbia. Boris Brus, Alja Oblak, Julija Rohrer, Karolina Rudnicka, Lara Saftić, Predrag Stojaković and Marko Trampuž proved themselves as the best performing team.

The first group of children has set off forPoreč to spend a part of their summer holidays, when the school doors are locked, together with volunteers and carers of the Slovenian Friends of YouthAssociation. 300 children from Maribor and Velenje will spend the first day of their summer holidays at the seaside. Among them are also children for whom these holidays will be entirely free of charge as a part of the humanitarian program Wink at the Sun.

Sandoz announced a long-term commitment tohelp prevent the deaths of millions of children worldwide by supplying a keyantibiotic formulation, as part of the United Nation’s new Every Newborn ActionPlan.

The center of Maribor was filled with playful laughter of children participating at the Lek Sunshine Games and Funny Olympics to mark the end of the holidays. As a part of the so-called Holidays withFriends, as the Maribor Association of Friends of Youth (FYA) named their summer activities, 141 children from the humanitarian initiative A Wink at theSun enjoyed free holidays financed with a help of FIHO funds and other donation campaigns by SAFY and FYA Maribor. A Wink at the Sun initiative by theSlovenian Association of Friends of Youth (SAFY), enabling free holidays for children coming from socially disadvantaged families, has been supported byLek, a Sandoz company, for nearly 16 years.

More than 3,000 Novartis associates inSlovenia are participating this week in the Be Healthy Celebration Week, the central part of the global Novartis Be Healthy initiative. From September 8 to12 the associates from all sites in Slovenia – in Ljubljana, Mengeš, Lendavaand Prevalje – pay special attention to looking after their health and wellbeing. Once again they are encouraged by Petra Majdič.

The first week in October has been dedicated specially to children since 1954. In this year’s Children’s Week betweenOctober 6 and 12, the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth (SAFY) will pay special attention to play and all those activities that children choose themselves and enjoy participating in, and that are invaluable for the development of their social, intellectual and cognitive skills. A part of these efforts is also the Wink at the Sun initiative, which for 16 years has been a joint project of SAFY and Lek, a Sandoz company.

The Little House of Experiments is a smaller version of the House of Experiments that travels all over Slovenia turning selected Slovenian primary schools that it visits into a science center for one day. The journey around Slovenia, enabled by Lek, a Sandoz company, and TelekomSlovenia d.d., began in Prekmurje, where the students of the Lendava I Bilingual Primary School had the opportunity to be the first to try out over forty mobile experiments, jumping out of the boxes of the Little House ofExperiments.

The Red Noses performing in the CaravanOrchestra show, dedicated to children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, are continuing their journey across Slovenia. This autumn they are visiting children in the towns of Ig, Novo mesto, Strunjan, Vipava, Dobrnaand Maribor. This is the first such program of its kind in Slovenia, supported byLek, a Sandoz company.

Lek Pharmaceuticals, a Sandoz company, once again received the TOP 10 Education Management Award 2013. The award has been presented by Planet GV and the Education Management Institute Sofos for the thirteenth year in a row to ten companies in Slovenia which in the previous year invested the most intensely and systematically in the education of employees.

The Little House ofExperiments is a smaller version of the House of Experiments that travels allover Slovenia turning selected Slovenian primary schools that it visits into a science center for one day. The journey around Slovenia, enabled by Lek, a Sandoz company, and Telekom Slovenia d.d., began in Lendava a month ago. Today, theLittle House of Experiments visited the students of the Grm primary School who had the opportunity to try out over forty mobile experiments, jumping out of the boxes of the Little House of Experiments.

Associates of Lek, a Sandoz company, Simona Jevševar, PhD; Maja Kenig, PhD; Nebojša Furlan and Sašo Tomše from Biopharmaceuticals Mengeš, together with their colleagues from theNational Institute of Chemistry Ljubljana – Prof. Vladka Gaberc Porekar, PhD,Ana Jesenko and Tatjana Milunović, MSc, who is involved as a researcher in theDevelopment Analytics department at Biopharmaceuticals Mengeš – , are the recipients of the Puh Award for the development and production of bio similar medicinal products filgrastim and pegfilgrastim and the transfer thereof into production.

During the ceremony to mark the Research Day of the Faculty of Pharmacy held as part of University Ljubljana Week, the recognitions were presented to students as well as the Dean’s and Prešeren Awards of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Klemen  Naveršnik, PhD., prototype analytics group head at the Sandoz Development Center Slovenia, received the Dean’s award for the most prominent scientific achievement in 2014.

The Pregl Award for an outstanding doctoral work in the field of chemistry and related sciences was bestowed today at theNational Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana. It was awarded to Tina Trdan Lušin, PhD., a researcher at the Sandoz Development  Center Slovenia, who studied, in the context of her doctoral work, pharmacogenetics aspects of metabolism and transport of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM).
