Highlights in the Year 2012

This week as part of the Asthma and Sport program, which is run by the Spolint Institute in cooperation with Lek, a Sandoz company, a month of free swimming specially adapted for asthma patients began in Ljubljana. With the help of donations collected over the past year, free swimming will be available to around 40 asthma patients, mainly children and youths.

Today, Lek employes have for the eighth year running taken part in the celebration of Community Partnership Day, a global Novartis volunteering initiative. Over 200 employees from all locations in Slovenia offered their help to individuals and various organisations. Throughout Novartis, over 25,000 volunteers from 54 countries joined this year’s event, a 25 percent increase on the previous year.

From 20–22 May 2012, the Regional BioCamp is once again hosting in Ljubljana 35 selected best and most promising undergraduate and postgraduate natural-science students from the Alpe–Adria region. The event, which is unique in Slovenia, has this year brought together the participants and renowned experts from home and abroad with a common denominator of commitment to broadening access to the most advanced therapies in the field of malignant and neglected diseases to as many people as possible. The Regional BioCamp will close tomorrow evening in Ljubljana Castle with a presentation of awards for the participants with the best business plan for starting up and developing a biotechnology company.

Coinciding with World Spirometry Day, which is celebrated on June 27 this year, today marked the start of the 5th annual Lek “For Better Breathing” bicycling marathon. As part of the activities of the Asthma & Sports program on World Spirometry Day, the Spolint Institute and Lek, a Sandoz company, held various activities designed to raise awareness of the extent of pulmonary diseases and the importance of taking care of your lungs. A team of Lek cyclists will join Marko Baloh on a route of over 400 km, accompanied by a mobile team from the Asthma & Sports program, which will carry out free lung testing with a spirometer in towns all over Slovenia.

Children vacationing at the Villa in Kranjska Gora were today entertained by the Lek Sunshine Games which have been brightening children’s summer holidays for the last 14 years, and by the Slovene Volunteerism Ambassador Barbara Miklič Türk. At the holiday camps of the Slovenia Association of Friends of Youth (SAFY), nearly 2,500 children are currently enjoying carefree holidays; at least half of whom were able to go on vacation due to the humanitarian campaign A Wink at the Sun.

Novartis Group Company associates across more than 50 countries participated in the second annual Novartis Be Healthy Celebration Week from September 10-14, 2012. During the week, Novartis Group sites were offering many opportunities to help associates take control of their personal health. This second annual Be Healthy Celebration Week was organised also in all Lek sites throughout Slovenia, hosting our Olympian Petra Majdič, who joined the associates for a physical workout and then took up with them a culinary challenge.

For nine years in a row, the Red Noses have been bringing joy and laughter to patients throughout Slovenia. Today, after a brief ceremony held at the Paediatric Clinic where the Red Noses started making their first hospital rounds in 2004, they gave a preview of how they will carry out their activities in waiting rooms at the Ljubljana Paediatric Clinic, where from now on they will visit young patients every Tuesday and Wednesday. From 1st October they will also start visiting patients at the Ptuj General Hospital. In fulfilling their mission they are once again supported by the long-term general sponsor Lek Pharmaceuticals, a Sandoz company.

The management board of the Managers Association selected Vojmir Urlep, President of the Board of Management of Lek, a Sandoz company, as Manager of the Year 2012. Recognition will be awarded to him at the Management Congress on Thursday, 27 September, in Portorož.

On the occasion of the 10th Innovation Day, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) awarded most innovative companies and best innovators in year 2011. Among 230 participating innovations, Lek Pharmaceuticals, a Sandoz company, received the highest acknowledgement – the Gold Innovation Award. The award was presented to Dr Ivana Gazić Smilović, expert researcher at the Department of Organic Synthesis, and Dr Zdenko Časar, global Head of API Portfolio Management at Sandoz, for the development of a new method for preparation of active ingredient for treatment of plasma cell cancer.

Sandoz Biopharmaceuticals, the global leader in biosimilars, opened a new laboratory for cellular and molecular biology at its development Center in Mengeš, Slovenia. The laboratories will help Sandoz scientists at Mengeš strengthen their capabilities and further contribute to the fulfillment of Sandoz Biopharmaceuticals’ mission – to broaden patient access to advanced biological medicines. With this new investment, Novartis will have invested a total of nearly 54 million Euros in development, research and production of biopharmaceuticals in Slovenia, a clear demonstration of the company’s confidence in, and commitment to its Slovenian sites.

The Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia presented a Children Learning to Help project, which is carried out in collaboration with the Jesenice College of Nursing and the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, sponsored by Lek, a Sandoz company. The project is intended for children in the first triad of primary schools and groups of the oldest kindergarten children, who want, can and are able to help.
