In the Youth Climatic Health Resort Rakitna the last of three of Lek’s breathing workshops, held in celebration of this year’s World Asthma Day, finished today. At the workshops, the representatives of the Asthma and Sport Association taught children and adolescents and their parents how important proper breathing is and why. They demonstrated the most common mistakes in breathing, how to correct them and what kind of breathing exercises should be practised. After the conclusion of the workshop on Rakitna, the participants eagerly awaited the arrival of the 12-member team of Lek cyclists that had earlier set off on the fourth Lek cycling marathon »For Better Breathing« around Slovenia on World Asthma Day, led by the Slovenian ultramarathon cyclist Marko Baloh.

The holidays are in full swing and nearly 2,500 children are currently enjoying carefree holidays at the holiday camps of the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth; quite a few of them were able to go on vacation due to the A Wink at the Sun charity campaign. But the children vacationing at the Villa Šumica in Kranjska Gora (Ljubljana Moste – Polje Association of Friends of Youth) are especially happy, since they were entertained by the Lek Sunshine Games and an honored guest, Slovene Volunteerism Ambassador and wife of the President of Slovenia, Barbara Miklič Turk. While the children chatted with the guests and enjoyed a show by the Kolenc Family Theater, the organizers of the humanitarian campaign presented the results of this year’s drive; words were also spoken of difficult situations among families, which are particularly painful during the holiday season, especially for children.

»He who reads reaches further than his arm can reach, sees better than with a naked eye, hears more than his ears can perceive and has a longer stride than his legs can manage,« wrote author Slavko Pregl in his address on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Week. Children’s Week has been celebrated in Slovenia for nearly 60 years and the motto of this year’s event is »Let’s go with a book into the world«. This year’s theme is to reflect upon what is considered to be a good book (among more than 1,000 books that are annually published in our country, only about 300 of them deserve to be rated as ‘good books’) as well as on the importance of reading in our formative years and beyond into our adult life. A particularly valuable contribution to the development of the reading culture among Slovenian children is also the Reading Badge project, organised by the Friends of the Youth Association (SAFY), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in year 2011.
