Lek pharmaceuticals inaugurated a new manufacturing plant (PORT1), the first of its kind in Slovenia and central and eastern Europe. The plant located in Menges (near the capital Ljubljana, Slovenia), constructed for the production of biopharmaceuticals, was officially opened today by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovsek. The new cell-culture facility, which was built in just two years at an investment of more than €18 million, shows Lek's dedication to further strengthen its research and development and to contribute to Sandoz's leading position in biopharmaceuticals. Sandoz yesterday inaugurated a new manufacturing plant at its Schaftenau site (near Kufstein) in Tyrol, Austria.

Novartis Chairman & CEO, Dr. Daniel Vasella, discussed the importance of Lek as a cornerstone in the global development network for generic medicines at a meeting held today at Lek's headquarters. Lek is part of Sandoz, Novartis' generic business and the world's second largest generic medicine company.

Lek Pharmaceuticals d.d. presented its refreshed visual identity. As a new member of Sandoz, Novartis generics’ business, with its refreshed visual identity, Lek communicates the advantages it has gained through integration and which set it apart from its competition. Integration with the global pharmaceutical company Novartis, i.e. its generics business Sandoz, represents new momentum for Lek, which is being reflected today on various levels of operation. One of these levels is Lek's fresh and modern image, which Lek has developed together with the Arih advertising agency.

Signalling its continued commitment to the emerging economies of the recently expanded European Union, Novartis AG today announced a €70 million overall investment in a new generics’ production and logistics’ facility in Stryków, Poland. Operated by the Slovenian generics leader Lek, a new Sandoz company, the new facility is expected to create 150 new jobs in the Łódź region of Poland. The 25,000-square-meter complex will include an administration building, laboratories, production lines and storage centers.

Lek, a new Sandoz company, and part of Novartis generics’ business, today inaugurated a new pharmaceutical plant in Targu Mures, Romania, 340km from Bucharest. Focusing on macrolide antibiotics, the 4,550-square-meter complex will include an administration building, laboratories, production lines and a storage center. Out of total investment of $30 million in Romania, the Targu-Mures macrolide production competence center investment is 12 million USD. The facility will provide products for the growing needs of the entire European market and will support the continued growth of Sandoz. The plant was officially inaugurated by the Slovenian Prime Minister Anton Rop and the Romanian Minister of Health, Dr. Ovidiu Brinzan.

His Excellency Joseph Deiss, President of the Swiss Confederation, together with the other members of the Swiss delegation who are on an official visit to Slovenia, visited Lek Pharmaceuticals. Since 2002, Lek has operated as a part of the Swiss Novartis Group, which is the owner of Lek. Lek's top management presented the Lek company to the Swiss delegation, including its operations and the Lek Development Center, and concluded the visit with a tour of the Lavicka Collection.

Upon publication of the fifth edition of the professional medical book “Arterial Hypertension”, its editors and reviewers, Asst. Dr. Rok Accetto, Asst. Dr. Jurij Dobovisek, Prof. Dr. Miran Kenda and Prof. Dr. Pavel Poredos prepared a presentation of this book and a summary of its key messages for healthcare professionals. This event took place on Friday, 18 June 2004, in the premises of Lek Pharmaceuticals d.d., Ljubljana, Slovenia. The fifth edition of the book ”Arterial Hypertension” not only contains new guidelines for the management of patients with arterial hypertension, but goes even further in the therapeutic part. It brings the latest views on controlling hypertension with medications. The basic purpose of the book is to advance the present knowledge of health professionals regarding high blood pressure and its consequences. Both the fourth and fifth editions of this book were enabled by Lek, which thus reaffirmed its constant and significant support to the education of doctors.

Sandoz, the generic business of Novartis, launched a generic version of pravastatin (cholesterol lowering drug) today in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. The product, which is a result of Lek knowledge, will be marketed through Sandoz entities on the respective markets. The launch of pravastatin is a successful alliance of Lek development, registrations, production and other key knowledge with the Sandoz global sales network.

The Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana and Lek Pharmaceuticals unveiled the Slovene Electronic Medical Dictionary, the first edition of the electronic form of the Slovene Medical Dictionary, which they published together. The e-dictionary will be available to physicians, pharmacists, other health-care workers and students. It will assist physicians and pharmacists in their everyday work with patients and in their own communications. The instructions on correct spelling, pronunciation and use will be welcomed by students as well as all professionals who write professional and lay texts or make public appearances.
Lek strengthens its manufacturing network with a new high-tech production facility for Active pharmaceutical ingredients

Lek, a new Sandoz company, opened a new production facility for organic chemical synthesis in Menges, where they will manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients for finished dosage forms of drugs for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Lek will be supplying active pharmaceutical ingredients to other Sandoz sites for sales on the most demanding pharmaceuticals markets of the European Union and the USA.

As part of this year's charity campaign, Lek, a new Sandoz company will donate over 1000 personal computers to elementary and secondary schools, health-care institutions and organizations which work with children, and local associations which contribute to the improvement of educational conditions for youths and of local environments throughout Slovenia.

The Slovene Chamber of Commerce, bestowed the award of Innovator of the Year 2003 to a group composed of Egidij Capuder, Mateja Kovacic and Bojan Kofler of Lek, a new Sandoz company. The group won top honors for their innovation "Production of Patentable Forms of Amoxiclav".
