Highlights in the Year 2013

Today, for the 45th time in a row, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) presented awards for outstanding business and entrepreneurial achievements in recognition of those executives who over many years have successfully led their companies. This year there are 8 award winners, from four Slovenian regions and eight different branches of industry. The award among large companies was given to Vojmir Urlep, President of the Board of Management of Lek, a Sandoz company.

This year’s Community Partnership Day, which will take place on April 25 in Slovenia, kicked-off last week by 12 of our associates who raised more than 25,000 Euros for the Children’s Helpline as a part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the SAFY.

Today, the core events as a part of the month of volunteering were held, with which the associates of Novartis Slovenia (Lek, a Sandoz company, Pharma and Animal Health) joined the Novartis global volunteering initiative for the ninth year running, which this year in Slovenia has been ongoing for the entire month. Over 250 volunteers from all sites in Slovenia, in Ljubljana, Mengeš, Lendava, Prevalje and Kranjska Gora are lending a hand to individuals and various organisations. Throughout Novartis, more than 16,500 associates in 56 countries are engaging in voluntary activities in celebration of the company’s 17th Community Partnership Day.

Sandoz announces that it has launched in Slovenia a generic mometasone nasal spray for the treatment of seasonal or perennial allergy rhinitis and symptomatic treatment of nasal polyps.

To mark the World Asthma Day, the pharmaceutical company Lek, a Sandoz company, and the Spolint Institute taught the children, as a part of the Asthma and Sport programme, by means of a breathing workshop and an educational story about Dihec Mihec and Tačko Dlačko, about the importance of proper breathing for a healthy life style. An active approach to life with asthma from childhood onwards, besides receiving appropriate treatment, is namely the key to the quality life with asthma, one of the most common chronic diseases from which, according to estimates1, as many as 300 million of the world’s population suffers.

On Monday, 13 May 2013, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Dr Jernej Pikalo, at the premises of Lek Pharmaceuticals, a Sandoz company, in Ljubljana addressed the participants of the Regional BioCamp 2013 which hosts the most promising students from the Alpe-Adria region. The Regional BioCamp encourages cooperation between academia and industry in the field of pharmacy. The participants from 7 countries, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Monte Negro, Macedonia and Austria, are taking part.

Today, Lek, a Sandoz company, marked with a ceremony 35 years of operation at its Prevalje site. In 1978, a small plant for the production of penicillin products started operating, which has grown over these past 35 years, eventually developing into an important part of Sandoz, one of the leading global generic pharmaceutical companies, and retained its role of an important employer in the region with currently more than 200 employees.

On World Spirometry Day, celebrated on June 27, the 6th annual Lek “For Better Breathing” cycling marathon started in Lendava at 10.30 am. The cycling event is organized by the Spolint Institute and Lek, a Sandoz company. The purpose of this 400-kilometer long route is to raise awareness of the seriousness of pulmonary diseases and the importance of their early detection. The cycling team will be accompanied by a mobile team from the Asthma & Sports program, which will perform free pulmonary function testing with a spirometer in Lendava, Metlika and Ribnica.

Today, the Vila holiday facility in Kranjska Gora became a happy Lek Sunshine Games arena. This is a special day of events with which the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth (SAFY) and Lek, a Sandoz company, want to brighten the summer break for children who are enjoying holidays organised as part of the SAFY program. Lek Sunshine Games were also visited by Vlasta Nussdorfer, a human rights ombudsman.

Tonight, the International Centre of Graphic Arts is opening its doors to the 30th Biennal of Graphic Arts, the long-term supporter of which is is Lek, a Sandoz company. This year’s edition will feature many exhibitions and artistic events, and Lek, a Sandoz company, will pay tribute to this jubilee Biennal with the exhibition Tribute to Biennal in the Lek Gallery. Activities with regard to the Biennal will be held from 24 November at various venues across Ljubljana.

Dr Zdenko Časar, global Head of API Portfolio Management at Sandoz and Dr Gaj Stavber, researcher in the API development at Sandoz research center Slovenia, were awarded at today’s ceremony in Brdo pri Kranju on the occasion of the Innovation Day 2013, the Gold Innovation Award for the best innovation at the national level. This award for innovation has been presented for the 11th year running by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS).

More than 2,400 Lek employees participate in the Be Healthy Celebration Week 2013, a core five-day event within Novartis global Be Healthy initiative, intended for active promotion of healthy living among the associates. This year’s Be Healthy Celebration Week will take place in Slovenia from September 23-27 at all sites of Lek, a Sandoz company – in Ljubljana, Mengeš, Lendava and Prevalje.

By achieving annual and long-term objectives for the period up to 2015, Lek, a Sandoz company, has once again enhanced environment performance. With new investments and technological improvements per tonne of product it cut back the use of water by 32% and the use of energy in the production process by 24% over 2010, the baseline year. By expanding many areas of business operations it created 300 new job positions, mainly in the production, quality and biopharmaceutics. Lek’s achievements are highlighted in the sustainability report in which, for the third year in a row, the economic, environmental and social impacts are presented, using internationally established and comparable indicators.

At today’s ceremony, held in Cankarjev dom, Lek, a Sandoz company, received the Invest Slovenia FDI Award, for its long-term presence in Slovenia. The award is presented by the Public Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Investments and Entrepreneurship. When selecting winners, the judging panel shortlisted only those companies which had more than 10% of foreign capital, employed more than 50 people and had added value exceeding 35,000 EUR per employee, additional criteria considered were also, that a company is not tax-defaulted, as well as its credit rating.

Lek, a Sandoz company, continues to hold the full certificate Family Friendly Company which they received as one of the first companies in Slovenia in 2007. The extension of the certificate confirms the commitment of Lek, a Sandoz company, to establish a family friendly work environment which contributes to greater satisfaction and loyalty of employees. The certificate is awarded by a non-governmental organisation Ekvilib Institute.

For the fourth time the recruitment portal MojeDelo.com (MyJob.com) conducted the annual survey on the most reputable Slovenian companies. In the recent years, Lek, a Sandoz company, has been placed in the group of the most reputable employers; however, this year Lek, a Sandoz company, was recognized as the most reputable employer in Slovenia.
