Prof. Uroš Urleb, PhD., member of Board of Management of Lek d.d.

Uroš Urleb holds a master’s degree in Pharmacy and a PhD degree in Organic Chemistry. He gained further expertise at the INSEAD Business School (Strategic R&D Management and International Project Management, Change Management) in France and at the Harvard Business School, USA, in the field of strategies in the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology. He also attended a number of Novartis' training sessions with regard to management, strategy, negotiation and communication.

During his career, he took on many expert and leadership positions. From 1991 to 1995, he was deputy dean at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Ljubljana, and from 1998 to 2000 a member of the Management Board of the University of Ljubljana. From 1997 to 2000, he was a member of the Committee for Medicinal Products at the Ministry of Health, from 1998 to 2002 a member of the Management Board of the Institute of Pharmacy, and from 1999 to 2001 the president of the Slovenian Pharmaceutical Society. From 2001 to 2004, he was an expert for the European Pharmacopoeia drawn up by the Council of Europe, and thereafter until 2018 a member of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission. From 2018 onwards, he has also been a member of the Management Board of the National Institute of Biology.

His career path at Lek started in 2000 when he became a member of the board of management responsible for research and development. In 2002, he was appointed executive director of Drug discovery unit. In late 2008, he assumed the role of Chief Scientific Officer for Global Product Development at Sandoz in Holzkirchen, Germany. Before joining Lek, he was professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana.

From 2018, Prof. Uroš Urleb, PhD., has assumed the role of Global Head Technical Development Biosimilars in Global Drug Development, Technical Research & Development (GDD) at Novartis. Prior to this, he held a similar position at Sandoz (2008-2012), and then at Novartis Technical Operations/Biologics Technical Development and Manufacturing (2016-2018). From 2018 onwards, he has also been Site Head Biologics Technical Development Mengeš.

In 2012, he received the Sandoz Excellence Award for his work. He has published more than 100 scientific publications, 5 scientific monographs and has more than 10 patents granted.

Effective October 1, 2019, Prof. Uroš Urleb, PhD., has been appointed a Member of the Lek d. d. Board of Management.
